FantasyCon is one of the more civilised genre conventions. There are no costumes, unless you count Peter F. Hamilton's tecnnicolor dream waistcoat, and not so many screaming hordes of autograph hunters.

It's more about the literature, with a programme packed full of readings, panels, quizzes and signings. At the 2010 FantasyCon there was a good chance of getting to talk to authors for more than a few seconds, and of finding them relaxed at the bar rather than cordoned off behind barriers. So it's an intimate affair. As such it makes a great choice for a first convention, especially since there was a dedicated Area 51 for welcoming convention virgins.
