Science fiction and fantasy
by Vera Nazarian
Percy isn't alone. On the battlements of Letheburg a mortal army stands against an army of the undead. The defenders have the help of a group of young women, former travelling companions, and the sorcerous Grial. Nobody is quite sure of the extent of Grial's magic, and she has a tendency to attribute the power of her spells to others.
The tragic tale of Claere, a dead princess, and her lovestruck companion Flau who is eaten up by guilt, continues in its gothic and emo glory. The two of them stick together like a superglue accident, until it seems as if one of them is bound to swallow the other one.
Behind much of the mayhem of a world at war and on the brink of destruction is the Queen, Rumanar, who is hell bent on making war and annihilating almost everything in her path. She's a formidable opponent, fierce and unreasonable. The tension ramps up as the story seems to be building towards a big battle.
As this is the third book in the trilogy a lot of things are revealed. However, much of this comes about through an early conversation between characters, and this includes some complex lore regarding immortality and ancient gods. It's a slow point in the story.
However, the tension soon returns as our favourite characters are threatened with terrible fates, and must fight not only to survive, but to overcome death and the gods. The ending ratchets up the intensity, tragedy, and high stakes. It's all on an epic scale.
Cobweb Forest also has its moments of sweetness to leaven the more horrific parts. And at the end, the author spends a good deal of time tying up loose ends and giving proper closure to the various plot threads and minor characters. So as well as playing all the right emotional notes, this ambitious series comes to a satisfying conclusion.
